Par
The number of strokes a skilled golfer is expected to need to complete a hole, including two putts.
The term comes from the stock exchange, where a stock trades "above" or "below" its par value. In 1870, golf writer A.H. Doleman asked professionals David Strath and James Anderson what score perfect play should produce at Prestwick, and used their answer as the course's "par," with Young Tom Morris famously winning that year's Open two strokes over it.
