Bogey

A score of one stroke over par on a hole.

More on this

The name comes from an imaginary opponent nicknamed "Colonel Bogey" at a British military club in 1892 (every member held a rank), representing the target score to beat on a hole, effectively the ancestor of modern par. On the scorecard, a bogey means a 5 on a par-4, a 4 on a par-3, one shot worse than expected, not automatically a bad hole.
