The area of very short, smooth grass surrounding the hole, where putting takes place.

"Green" originally referred to the entire course in Scotland, not just the putting surface, early golf even had two separate "greens": the "fair green" (today's fairway) and the "putting green." Only the putting sense survived into modern use. Some researchers trace the word further back to lawn bowls, a much older sport played on a similar mown surface.
