Penalty Area (Hazard)
Water or other marked areas (yellow or red stakes/lines) where a ball landing inside carries a one-stroke penalty and specific relief options.
This term didn't exist before 2019: the USGA and R&A's rules modernization officially replaced "water hazard" with "penalty area" on January 1 of that year, and deliberately broadened the definition to also cover non-water trouble like deserts or jungles.
