Winter Simulator Training: How to Actually Improve Indoors (Without Getting Worse)
A golf simulator is the best thing that ever happened to winter golf, and it can also quietly teach you the wrong lessons if you trust it blindly. Here's what the numbers actually mean indoors, what's different from real grass, and how to spend the off-season getting better instead of just staying busy.
Most of that gap isn't the simulator lying to you about your swing, it's the simulator being unable to test your short game and putting the way a real course does. Knowing exactly where that gap comes from is the difference between a productive winter and a wasted one.

Three things conspire to make simulator golf easier than the real thing, and none of them are about your swing improving.
The mat is more forgiving than grass. On real turf, hitting a shot fat costs you: the club digs in before the ball, and the shot dies. On a firm hitting mat, the club can skid or bounce through that same mistake and still reach the ball cleanly, so a fat strike can look and feel like a good one. That's not a minor quirk, it actively teaches your body the wrong low point if you don't check for it.
The distance on screen is calculated, not measured. A launch monitor captures ball speed, launch angle, and spin at the moment of impact, then runs that data through a physics model to project carry distance, apex, and descent angle under standard conditions (sea level, about 15°C, no wind). It's a genuinely good model, but it's still a projection of where the ball would have landed, not a measurement of where it actually did. That matters most for short, high-spin shots, where small errors in the inputs move the projected number more.
Putting indoors tests your stroke, not your eyes. A flat hitting mat or putting pad can't reproduce a real green's slope, grain, or speed. Indoor putting practice is genuinely useful for stroke mechanics and distance control on a known, flat surface, but it can't teach you to read a break, which is a big share of what real putting actually is.

The spin-rate caveat comes down to how your specific unit actually sees the ball, not just which brand made it. Pure radar-based units need to track a real chunk of ball flight to calculate spin accurately, which a short indoor room doesn't give them, so they lean on specially marked balls (TrackMan's RCT balls are a standard ball with a reflective marker inside) to read spin reliably at close range. That's true of TrackMan's original radar unit, but not automatically every product the brand sells: TrackMan's newer iO unit blends radar with high-speed cameras and infrared specifically to solve the short-room problem, so the brand name alone doesn't tell you which limitation applies. Camera-based units (like Foresight or SkyTrak) photograph the ball's dimple pattern directly at impact across multiple frames, so a cramped room doesn't limit them the same way, but they still want a real premium ball with a normal dimple pattern, not a scuffed range ball or a limited-flight foam ball, to read spin correctly. Check what technology your specific unit uses rather than assuming from the brand, and if you're not sure, that's worth finding out before you trust a spin number that looks unusual.
A field guide to the letters on screen
Every simulator throws a wall of abbreviations at you, and they're not fully standardized between brands, the same two letters can mean different things depending on whose software you're using. The space itself can change your swing
This one is easy to miss because it happens gradually. Golfers who set up in a room with a low ceiling or a tight net tend to unconsciously shorten their backswing and flatten their swing plane to avoid feeling close to the ceiling, even when they never actually hit it. The swing that results isn't the one you'd make on an open range, it's a smaller, more protective version of it, and because it happens by feel rather than by decision, it's easy to groove without noticing. The common fix is simply enough clearance: most instruction on home simulator setups recommends a ceiling height of at least 9 to 10 feet (2.7 to 3 m), and 10 to 11 feet (3 to 3.4 m) or more if you're tall or have a naturally upright swing. If your space is tighter than that, it's worth occasionally checking your swing against outdoor video or a lesson to make sure the indoor version hasn't quietly become your only version.
What actually gets better over a winter of simulator work
GOLF Magazine's panel of Top 100 Teachers has pointed to a few specific things simulators are genuinely good for, not "everything," which is exactly why they're worth naming:
- Building swing speed. Coach Jason Birnbaum's off-season advice is to work on raw clubhead speed rather than technique, since speed work doesn't require a golf course and the off-season removes the pressure of a swing change affecting your score.
- Calibrating wedge distances. Coach Tim Cooke recommends using a simulator specifically for shots from 30 to 100 yards, to build a real feel for how your swing speed translates into carry distance at those lengths, since that's one of the few short-game numbers a simulator measures well.
- Changing a motor pattern without the pressure of a result. Dr. Alison Curdt's point is that winter is the one time you can rebuild a piece of your swing without a live scorecard punishing every mis-hit while it's still new, which is exactly the "consequence-free" window most instructors agree a real swing change needs (commonly cited at around three months of repetition to actually stick).
- Strike quality. Coach Mark Durland's approach is foot spray or face tape on every rep, aiming to "own the strike," on the logic that once contact is consistently centered, most other swing symptoms get quieter on their own.
Four ways simulator practice quietly makes you worse
- Trusting a fat shot the mat let you get away with. Fix this the same way you'd verify any strike claim, put a strip of impact tape or foot spray on the face every so often, or lay a towel a couple inches behind the ball; catching the towel means your low point arrived too early, even if the shot on screen looked fine.
- Letting the ceiling shrink your swing without noticing. If you can't get a taller room, periodically compare your indoor swing to outdoor video from the same week, watching specifically for a shorter backswing or a flatter plane than you'd make on an open range.
- Only ever hitting driver. It's the most satisfying club to watch on screen, but it's rarely where a mid-handicap golfer's strokes are actually going. Split practice time across full swing, the 30 to 100 yards wedge window, and putting stroke mechanics, not just the club that produces the biggest number.
- Playing it like a video game instead of practicing. Random closest-to-the-pin games and casual virtual rounds are fun and have a real place, but if every session is unstructured play, you're not training anything in particular. Give at least part of each session a specific target, like a wedge-distance ladder or a strike-quality count, so there's something to actually get better at.
A winter training week
There's nothing magic about this exact split, the point is that it covers the parts of your game a simulator can genuinely test, instead of just hitting driver until the session's over.
- Strike and contact quality (20-30 minutes): impact tape or foot spray, working through a full bag with a focus on centered contact, not distance.
- Wedge distance ladder (30 to 100 yards): pick specific yardages inside that window and track how consistently you land carry distance within a tight range, not just the average.
- Full-swing speed or motor-pattern work: whichever your coach or your own diagnosis says you actually need this off-season, done without worrying about where the ball ends up.
- Putting stroke mechanics: distance control and a repeatable stroke path on a flat surface, saving real green-reading practice for whenever you're next on an actual green.
- A virtual round for course management: real club selection and risk decisions on a simulated course, treated like an actual round rather than free play.
Specific drills worth the net time
- Impact bag drill. Make a small backswing, drive into the bag with your hands leading and your chest still rotating through, and hold that position for a few seconds before resetting. Build up toward full speed while still finishing in that same held position; it's a fast way to feel what a centered, hands-forward strike is supposed to feel like.
- Towel-behind-the-ball strike check. Place a towel a couple of inches behind the ball and swing normally. Clipping the towel means the club bottomed out before the ball, the exact fault a forgiving mat is built to hide from you.
- Alignment stick gate. One stick on the ground pointing at your target, a second across your toe line. It gives instant, honest feedback on setup alignment and swing path without needing to interpret a screen.
- Wedge ladder. Pick four targets inside 30 to 100 yards, hit five balls to each, and track how many land inside a tight carry window rather than just your average distance, tightening that window over time.
- Putting gate drill. A gate made from two tees, just wider than your putter head, a few inches in front of the ball. It's a stroke-path check, not a green-reading drill, and that's exactly the piece of putting a simulator can actually train.
- A scored skills session, monthly rather than daily. Most simulator software includes a closest-to-the-pin or skills-challenge mode; used constantly it turns into unstructured play, but used once a month as a benchmark, it's a clean way to see whether the deliberate practice above is actually working.
