Launch Monitor Numbers Explained: What's Actually Worth Looking At

A launch monitor screen throws 15 to 20 numbers at you after every single swing. Almost nobody needs all of them. Here's which ones actually change how you practice, which ones are just along for the ride, and why "hit it harder" is usually the wrong takeaway from a bad number.

The 5 numbers that actually matter

Launch monitors can measure over 20 data points, but almost everything you'd want to know about a shot comes down to five of them. Everything else on the screen is either a detail that feeds into these five, or a number built more for club fitting than for practice.

Strike quality

Smash Factor

Ball speed divided by club speed. It's the single best number for how well you actually struck the ball, independent of how fast you're swinging. The PGA Tour average with a driver is 1.49, close to the physical ceiling for that club (1.50). A golfer swinging just as fast as a tour player but with a lower smash factor can easily lose 15 to 20 yards purely to that gap, no extra speed required to get it back.

When it's low, it's almost always one of four things, roughly in order of how often each one shows up:

  • Off-center strikes, the single biggest leak. A heel or toe hit, or one high or low on the face, costs 5 to 10 mph of ball speed compared to a center strike at the same swing speed. Impact tape or foot spray on the face will show you exactly where you're actually making contact.
  • An angle of attack that doesn't match the club, hitting down sharply on a driver, or too steeply on an iron, bleeds energy that should be going into ball speed.
  • Excessive face rotation through impact, a face that's still rotating hard (open or closed) at the moment of contact turns some of the energy into glancing, sideways impact instead of pure forward speed.
  • Equipment that doesn't fit, a shaft flex or loft mismatched to your swing can quietly cap your smash factor no matter how clean your contact is.

A useful diagnostic habit: if your club speed is steady from swing to swing but your smash factor bounces around, the issue is almost always strike location, not your swing itself.

Ball Speed

How fast the ball leaves the face, and the number most directly responsible for distance: roughly every 1 mph of ball speed adds about 2 yards of carry. It's the product of club speed and smash factor together, which is exactly why two golfers with the same clubhead speed can carry the ball 25 yards apart.

Direction

Face Angle

Where the clubface points at impact, and the single biggest factor in your starting direction, responsible for something like 75 to 85% of where the ball starts. If your face angle is open, the ball is starting right of your target line before your swing path even enters the conversation.

Club Path

The direction the clubhead is actually moving through impact, in-to-out or out-to-in. On its own it doesn't decide where the ball starts, but paired with face angle, the gap between the two is what curves the ball. See our Draw/Fade guide for exactly how that pairing works.

Attack Angle

Whether the clubhead is moving up or down through the ball. This is the most underrated number on the whole screen. At the same 100 mph of club speed, hitting up 5 degrees instead of down 5 degrees can add roughly 25 yards of carry with a driver, purely from the change in launch and spin, with zero extra swing speed. Face and path together: the number that actually curves the ball

This is the pairing that trips people up the most. Neither face angle nor club path curves the ball on its own, it's the gap between them. A face that's 2 degrees open with a path that's 2 degrees in-to-out is a straight shot, because the two numbers match. That same 2-degree-open face with a path that's 2 degrees out-to-in instead creates a 4-degree gap, and a shot that starts right and slices hard.

This is exactly why watching only your ball flight can be misleading. Two golfers can both slice the ball, one from an open face with a square path, the other from a square face with a badly out-to-in path, and the fix for each one is completely different even though the shot shape looks the same.

Spin rate: why "lower is always better" is a myth

Spin rate gets treated like a universal scoreboard, lower always wins, but that's only true relative to your ball speed. A golfer swinging 100 mph of ball speed with a driver generally wants somewhere around 2,600 to 3,100 rpm to stay airborne and carry it efficiently. A golfer with 160 mph of ball speed only needs about 2,440 to 2,970 rpm for the same result. Chasing a "tour pro" spin number without the ball speed to support it usually just produces a knuckleballing shot that drops out of the sky short of where it should.

The useful way to read your spin rate is always next to your ball speed, not as a number to minimize in isolation.

The numbers that look impressive but don't tell you much on their own

Carry and total distance from a single great swing feel amazing to see on a screen, but one big number doesn't tell you anything about whether you can repeat it. Hitting 4 to 10 balls with the same club and looking at the spread (your dispersion), not just your longest one, tells you far more about what to expect on the course.

Peak club speed on its own is mostly a bragging-rights number. Without smash factor sitting next to it, a high club speed number doesn't guarantee you're actually getting that speed into the ball.

How to actually use this at your next session

You don't need to analyze all 20 numbers after every swing. A practical approach: hit several balls with one club, and look at just three things: your smash factor (is your strike quality solid), your face angle and path together (what direction is the miss actually coming from), and your dispersion across the group of shots (not just your single best one). That's enough to tell you what to actually work on, without needing a data science degree to read the screen.
