Golf Swing Posture: Why Losing It Costs You Power, Contact, and Your Back
Good ball-strikers don't necessarily have prettier swings than everyone else. Mostly, they're just far better at staying in the position they started in. Here's what golf posture actually means, why it's so hard to hold onto once the club starts moving, and the real, measured cost, in distance, in consistency, and in your lower back, of losing it.

At address, a good setup puts your spine in a roughly 45-degree forward tilt from the hips, with a neutral curve (not overly arched, not rounded), and your weight balanced over the middle of your feet. The entire idea of the golf swing is to rotate your shoulders and hips around that tilt, not to change it. Your spine angle at address is supposed to be very close to your spine angle at impact.
TPI names three specific ways golfers lose that angle, and they're not the same fault even though they get lumped together:
- Loss of Posture is the general term: any significant change from your original setup angles by the time you reach impact, most often standing up taller than you started.
- Early Extension is the most common specific version: the hips and pelvis thrust forward, toward the ball, during the downswing, instead of staying back and rotating in place.
- Reverse Spine Angle happens earlier, in the backswing: the upper body leans backward, toward the target, instead of tilting away from it, the opposite of what a good backswing should do.
Why it's so common: it's usually not a swing thought at all
Telling a golfer to "stay down" or "keep your spine angle" over and over usually doesn't fix this, and there's a physical reason why. TPI's research points to several things that force the body to compensate:
- Limited hip mobility. If you can't perform a full, deep squat or a complete hip hinge without your heels lifting or your lower back rounding, your hips physically can't rotate through the space a proper downswing needs, so your body finds room the only way it can: by standing up.
- Weak glutes and core. Your glutes stabilize the pelvis and your core resists rotation from turning into swaying. Without enough strength there, the pelvis drifts toward the ball instead of staying centered.
- Limited trunk-to-pelvis separation. Good players rotate their shoulders a good deal further than their hips at the top of the backswing. If your spine and lats are tight, you don't have that separation available, so the body compensates by losing its original angles instead.
- An exaggerated setup posture. TPI also names two address-position faults that make this worse before the swing even starts: S-posture (too much arch in the lower back at setup, which shuts off the core) and C-posture (rounded shoulders and upper back, which limits rotation and encourages standing up to find turn).
In other words, "keep your posture" is a physical capacity as much as it is a swing thought. If your body can't get into the positions a stable swing requires, no amount of practice-swing feels will hold it there under speed.
What it costs you: power
Rotational power in the golf swing works the same way a hammer throw or a figure skater's spin does: the tighter and more stable the center of rotation, the more speed you build around it. Physicists call the force that holds something on a circular path centripetal force, and your pelvis is effectively the center of that circle in the downswing.
Early extension moves that center forward, toward the ball, which disrupts the circular path your body and the club are trying to swing on and bleeds off rotational speed before it ever reaches the clubhead. It's the difference between a tour player like Dustin Johnson, whose hips stay right on his original line all the way to impact, and an amateur whose hips drift forward by the time the club gets there. Elite long-drive competitors go a step further, actually moving their hips slightly away from the ball on the downswing, which adds even more rotational speed through a mechanism researchers call parametric acceleration. Moving the center of rotation forward does the opposite: it's giving speed back before you ever swing the club through the ball.
What it costs you: consistency
When your hips thrust toward the ball, there's simply less room left for your arms and the club to swing through on the way down. Golfers describe the feeling as getting "stuck," and the body has to solve that space problem somehow, in real time, mid-swing, which is exactly what turns a physical limitation into an inconsistent strike:
- Keep crowding the ball through impact, and contact drifts toward the heel. Your hands get pushed closer to your body, which pushes the club farther away from you at the exact moment it meets the ball, the same mechanism, taken one step further, that causes a shank. - "Escape" by standing up and pulling away instead, and contact drifts toward the toe. The club gets drawn back in toward your body, shortening its effective reach right when it needs to be at its longest.
- Either way, you've very likely opened or closed the clubface without meaning to. None of this was in the plan you rehearsed on the range, so your hands and arms make a last-instant adjustment to still find the ball, and that improvised adjustment is exactly what turns a shorter shot into an unwanted curve. Standing up also raises the low point of your swing, the exact spot in your arc where the club is closest to the ground. Raise it enough and you catch the ball above its equator instead of gliding cleanly under it: a thin or topped shot. What it costs you: your back
This is the cost most golfers never connect to their swing until it's already a problem. Research reviews on golf injuries consistently put lower back pain somewhere between 18% and 54% of all documented golf injuries, depending on the population studied, making it the single most common injury in the sport by a wide margin.
The load on your lower spine
A 2020 biomechanical review published in Sports Medicine and Health Science (Edwards, Dickin & Wang) found that compressive force on the L4-L5 vertebrae, right at the base of your spine, reaches 6.5 to 8 times your body weight in the instant right after impact, even in a technically sound swing. Reverse spine angle makes that worse: TPI calls it "one of the prime causes of lower back pain in golfers," because it forces your abdominal muscles to shut off during the backswing (they can't work properly from that bent-backward position) and then loads the right side of your lower back with extra compressive force as you rotate back through into impact, since the spine has to do work your hips and core should have been doing instead.
None of this means golf is dangerous for your back. It means a spine that changes angle, and gets loaded unevenly rep after rep, absorbs stress a stable, rotating one is built to handle instead.
How to actually check for it, and start fixing it
Check it first. Set up to a ball with an alignment stick, a golf bag, or a chair pushed up against your rear end, lightly touching. Make slow, controlled practice swings. If your glutes come off that object well before impact, you're early-extending, exactly the way TPI's own screening works.
Drills that build the feel:
- The wall (or bag) drill. Same setup as the check above, but the goal now is to keep contact for as long as possible into the downswing, only losing it naturally after the ball is gone.
- The head-on-a-wall drill. Rest your forehead lightly against a wall at address (or just imagine one) and take slow swings trying not to let your head leave it until well after impact. It's a simple way to feel how much your upper body wants to lift or drift.
- The spear drill. Imagine a spear running straight down through the crown of your head into the ground at your original setup angle. The only job during the backswing and downswing is to rotate around that spear without pushing up against it or pressing down on it. It's allowed to disappear only after the ball is gone.
Fix the cause, not just the feeling. Because this is so often a mobility and stability limitation rather than a habit, drills alone sometimes only mask the problem. If a deep squat or a full hip hinge feels genuinely restricted for you, working on hip and ankle mobility, plus glute and core strength, tends to produce a more permanent fix than any swing thought will.
